Bitcoin retirement calculator
How much bitcoin would you need to retire—and how do your other investments change that number?
The FIRE BTC Compass helps you explore financial independence with bitcoin and other assets. Its Goalseek tool uses your spending, investments, savings and selected assumptions to estimate a retirement date and the bitcoin stack needed to fund your retirement horizon.

Start with the retirement you need to fund
There is no single bitcoin retirement number. A plan that funds $40,000 a year for 20 years is different from one that funds $80,000 for 40 years.
- Enter your annual spending, bitcoin holdings and other investments that count toward your FIRE portfolio.
- Add income and savings. Continuing retirement income can reduce the amount your investments need to supply.
- Choose your retirement horizon, inflation and growth assumptions, savings allocation and withdrawal approach.
- Compare the projected retirement date and bitcoin target, then change an assumption to see how much the result depends on it.
A simple worked example
This deliberately simplified example isolates the spending calculation. These are illustrative inputs, not recommended assumptions or a bitcoin price forecast.
- Retire now and fund 30 years of spending at $60,000 a year, in USD.
- Start with $600,000 in other investments and an assumed bitcoin price of $100,000.
- Use 0% bitcoin growth, 0% other-investment growth and 0% inflation, with no retirement income or further savings.
- Spend other investments first, then bitcoin. Require no minimum ending balance.
The total spending is $1.8 million. Other investments cover $600,000, leaving $1.2 million to fund with bitcoin. At the assumed price, the target is 12 BTC.
In this scenario, other investments fund the first 10 years and bitcoin funds the next 20. Starting with 12 BTC funds all 30 years and leaves no investments at the end. Increasing other investments to $900,000 reduces the bitcoin target to 9 BTC, with everything else unchanged.
A funded projection with nothing left over is not a safety margin. Real returns, inflation, taxes and spending will not follow this simplified path.
What Goalseek calculates—and what it does not
Goalseek tests possible retirement checkpoints. Before retirement, the model projects investments and savings. At each checkpoint, it checks whether investments and continuing income can fund every withdrawal over your selected retirement horizon.
The bitcoin target is the smallest stack that funds that period while holding the checkpoint’s other investments fixed. Withdrawals happen at the start of each projection period; growth follows, adjusted for inflation. Projected monetary values are expressed in today’s purchasing power. Your withdrawal approach controls which investments are spent first. No minimum ending balance is required.
The Dashboard’s withdrawal-rate FIRE benchmark is a separate calculation. Goalseek is a conditional projection, not a probability of success or a recommendation to retire. It does not include taxes, fees, account-access restrictions or adverse return sequences. Steady growth can make a plan look stronger than an uneven sequence of real returns.
Common questions
Can I include investments other than bitcoin?
Yes. The Compass models bitcoin and other FIRE investments separately. Only include assets you intend to use to fund retirement; home equity and restricted accounts are not automatically available for spending.
Is the bitcoin retirement calculator free?
The Dashboard, My Finances, snapshots, plan defaults and backup tools are free. Personalized Goalseek is part of Compass Pro, included with a paid FIRE BTC subscription. Pro access is unlocked separately in each browser.
Where are my financial inputs stored?
Calculations run in your browser and saved financial inputs stay on that device. Use the backup tools to keep a separate copy. The site also uses pageview analytics; local financial storage does not mean the site makes no network requests.
Does a funded result mean I can safely retire?
No. It means the selected assumptions fund the modeled withdrawals. Compare less favorable assumptions and consider risks outside the model. The Compass is an educational planning tool, not financial, investment or tax advice.
